17 Exhibits to See in May in San Diego

Summer is here in San Diego (at least it seems it to us!). What better way to stay cool than seeing some fun and interesting exhibits? We know of a few great ones opening and closing this month. Take your pick from the 17 below or check out some at your favorite museums and attractions.

  1. The History of the US Navy SEALS in Coronado, Coronado Museum of History and Art. We love this cool, free museum in Coronado and a new exhibit makes it that much better. SEALS just opened.
  2. The American Tapestry Biennial 10, Visions Art Museum. See some great woven tapestries at this juried exhibit. It just opened along with a couple other exhibits at Visions.
  3. New Members Show, Spanish Village Art Center. The free Gallery 21 hosts an exhibit with works by new members. Closes May 12th.
  4. 12th Annual SDSU Art Council Scholarship Exhibition, La Jolla Athenaeum. Enjoy the works of some talented up-and-coming SDSU students. Opens May 10th.
  5. Prix Pictet: Power, Museum of Photographic Arts. Power is the theme for the annual juried show and we have to say…there are some powerful pieces. Go before it closes May 18th.
  6. The Natural World, San Diego Natural History Museum. Photography exhibit alert–and with an award-winning photographer and photos from his travels in the world’s last great places. Opens May 17th.
  7. Architectural Appeal, Fallbrook Art Center. This exhibit includes multimedia art and photos from around the world. Opens May 17th.
  8. Cabrillo Lighthouse, at Cabrillo National Monument, reopens on May 19th. It has been closed for the last month for seismic retrofitting.
  9. There & Back Again, Mission Trails Regional Park. An award-winning photographer and his travel photos are featured in this cool and free exhibit. Closes May 23rd.
  10. Textile Art Without Machinery, University of San Diego. See some amazing baskets from the Native American culture up to present times. Closes May 25th.
  11. Jarmo Makila, Lux Art Institute. The artist created a few of the sculptures while on residency at Lux. Enjoy viewing them and other pieces as well. Closes May 24th.
  12. Function and Fantasy, Mingei International Museum. Ogle the diverse works of two artist brothers before the exhibit closes May 26th.
  13. Muscle Cars, San Diego Automotive Museum. Check out some great muscle cars and learn a thing or too at this exhibit before it closes May 30th.
  14. Crime Art Exhibit, SDSU Library. We love how interesting this project is…see for yourself! Closes May 31st.
  15. Women Artists of the West, Women’s Museum of California. Enjoy the annual membership exhibit including some very talented artists. Closes May 31st.
  16. Collectors in San Diego, Japanese Friendship Garden. Collectors around San Diego loaned some cool pieces for this exhibit. Go check them out before the pieces go back to their owners. Closes June 1st.
  17. Explor-O-Rama, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Get interactive with this very interactive exhibit. Closes June 1st.
