17 Exhibits to See in March in San Diego

Chicano art at MCASD: Downtown #sandiego #mcasd

Can you believe it’s already March? Let’s digest that fact for a minute. While you’re trying to decide where the year’s gone so far, check out the following list of great exhibits. Part of the year is behind us but these exhibits won’t be if you go in the next 30 days!

  1. Marching Toward Empowerment, Women’s Museum of California. Learn about the fight for women’s rights in the early 20th century. This informative exhibit just opened a few days ago.
  2. Lumen, Shadows and Chroma, Mission Trails Regional Park. Check out the works of three award-winning photographers who enjoy the outdoors as much as we all do. The exhibit runs one month only, until March 28th.
  3. Janine Free, Spanish Village Art Center. Gallery 21 hosts this free exhibit for a very short period of time (March 5-21). Want to know what it’s about? Three words: french street photography.
  4. Alfredo Jaar: Muxima, The San Diego Museum of Art. SDMA has some cool exhibits coming soon, starting with this dandy on the 15th. If you like film, poems and thought-provoking pieces, you’d better go!
  5. World of Watercolor, Fallbrook Art Center. Watercolors galore await you at this colorful exhibit. Be sure to enjoy it before it ends on the 16th.
  6. Mike Berg: Recent Textiles, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego: Downtown. Abstract textile lovers must see this before it leaves the Museum on the 16th.
  7. Collectors in San Diego, Japanese Friendship Garden. See some cool Japanese art and culture collector items in this exhibit that opens on the 20th.
  8. Jarmo Makila, Lux Art Institute. Mr. Makila will start his exhibit and residence at Lux on March 20th. During his residency, he will create a painting and 14 sculptures as part of his Lord of the Flies installation.
  9. Tattoos & Scrimshaw: The Sailor Art, Maritime Museum of San Diego. See some sailor tattoos when this exhibit opens on the 21st.
  10. Jazz Challenge, Visions Art Museum. We love the exhibits revolving around a themed challenge for members of different quilt/textile clubs. The current one is jazz themed!
  11. Chicanitas, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego: Downtown. Chicano art is on display until the 23rd. We love this exhibit for its variety of small and hip pieces.
  12. Contemporary Landscape Photography, Oceanside Museum of Art. There’s a lot of exhibits coming and going at OMA this month. This is one of the notables…pretty self-explanitory from the exhibit title. It closes March 23rd.
  13. Please Be Seated, Mingei International Museum. Chairs, chairs and more chairs. Very cool exhibit for the design minded. Closes March 30th.
  14. Muscle Cars, San Diego Automotive Museum. Learn all about the muscle car while enjoying a few real life ones too. Love this!
  15. From the Vault: Rare Artifacts with Fascinating Stories, San Diego Museum of Man. We think you know what’s involved in this exhibit from its title, but did you know one fascinating piece in the exhibit was owned by Playboy? Closes March 30th.
  16. Guitar, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. If you want to know everything about the guitar, including how to play the world’s largest guitar (which you’ll be able to do!), check out this exhibit. Closes the beginning of April.
  17. Object Lessons, Timken Art Museum. The Timken is a masterful museum with a piece by Mr. Gainsborough on loan for all viewers to see for free (the museum is free all the time fyi). Check it out before it goes back to LA at the beginning of April.
