17 Exhibits to See in December in San Diego

It’s actually cold in San Diego! Well, at least cold for all of us natives. The cold should send you indoors and what better place to hide out than amazing museums with awesome exhibits? There are some cool exhibits opening and closing this month, so hitting up at least a few is a must do! Here are the 17 exhibits to see in December in San Diego:

  1. December Nights, Balboa Park. Technically not an exhibit, but this is a big thing in San Diego. Not only has it been going on for years, it gives you a chance to check out most museums in Balboa Park for free and some fun holiday exhibits as well! Check out our December Nights Guide.
  2. Rites of Passage, San Diego Museum of Man. Learn about different cultures around the world with this exhibit. Closes December 8th.
  3. Coffee: The World in Your Cup, San Diego Natural History Museum. This exhibit just opened yesterday and closes the first week of January…the ode to coffee is a good bet for history buffs and coffee lovers!
  4. First Impressions: Recent Acquisitions, University of San Diego. One of two great art exhibits featuring what USD’s galleries are known for: their prints. Closes December 13th.
  5. Wood Turners of San Diego, Spanish Village Art Center. Gallery 21 hosts this free exhibit featuring some of the artists of San Diego. Closes December 16th.
  6. Guitar, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. We’ve been waiting with bated breath for this major exhibit. It should be a good one with plenty to see, do and hear! Opens December 20th.
  7. Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Martin Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego: Downtown. This cool new exhibit at MCASD features pieces from an outstanding collection of Chicano art. Opens December 21st.
  8. Art of the Holiday, Fallbrook Art Center. Holiday shows and sales are the best. Go here to get in the holiday mood and to pick up an original gift or two! Closes December 24th.
  9. Melora Kuhn, Lux Art Institute. If you want to view the art of an interesting woman who explores the human experience in her art, look no further than Lux. But go soon…the exhibit closes December 28th.
  10. Carried Array, La Jolla Athenaeum. Calling all UCSD alum: unite to support three recent art grads who are featured in this exhibit. Closes December 28th.
  11. Artisan Holiday Show and Sale, Borrego Art Institute. This holiday show and sale is a good place to find original gifts for everyone you know. Closes December 29th.
  12. SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration, SeaWorld. All decked out for the winter season and more fun than normal (can that even be possible?). Go before January 4th.
  13. Looking Towards 2015, The San Diego Museum of Art. A very insightful exhibit on the future of Balboa Park. Closes early January.
  14. 100+ Years of Coronado Yachting, Museum of Coronado History and Art. See a real Olympic Gold Medal and more from the yachting world and learn how it ties in with Coronado history.
  15. Best of Nature Photography, San Diego Natural History Museum. See some of the best nature photography from San Diego and all over the world. Closes December 31st.
  16. LEGO Star Wars X-wing Model Display, LEGOLAND. Check out the biggest LEGO Star Wars model in the world before it leaves the first week of January. And go for their Winter Nights while you’re at it.
  17. On the Fly, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Learn about the technology of flight and even create your own flying objects. Closes December 31st.
